Surface texture refers to the deviations in a material's surface from its ideal form, including roughness, waviness, and lay patterns. It encompasses microscopic variations that affect product quality, functionality, and performance in manufacturing applications.
What is the difference between RA and RT?
RA (Roughness Average) measures the arithmetic average of surface height deviations, while RT (Total Roughness) represents the maximum peak-to-valley height across the entire measured surface. RT captures extreme variations, whereas RA provides an overall smoothness indicator.
What is the difference between RA and RZ?
RA calculates the average roughness across the entire surface profile, while RZ (Average Maximum Height) measures the mean of the five highest peaks and five lowest valleys within a sampling length. RZ is more sensitive to surface irregularities than RA.
What is the difference between RA and RMS?
RA uses arithmetic averaging of absolute height deviations, while RMS (Root Mean Square) applies statistical averaging by squaring deviations before averaging. RMS gives greater weight to larger deviations, making it approximately 11% higher than RA for the same surface.
How does contactless measurement technology work?
Our M-Ray technology uses millimeter wave electromagnetic radiation—similar to cell phone signals—to measure thickness, basis weight, and surface characteristics without physical contact. This clean, non-nuclear approach penetrates opaque materials and delivers precise measurements even in harsh industrial environments.
What industries benefit from surface texture monitoring?
Our solutions serve textiles, nonwovens, plastics, construction materials, paper processing, automotive, steel, and medical device manufacturing. Any industry requiring precise thickness, basis weight, or surface quality control benefits from contactless measurement technology.
Can your systems integrate with existing production lines?
Yes, our solutions are designed for seamless integration. We offer turnkey installations for new lines and upgrade capabilities for existing systems, plus OEM modules for equipment manufacturers. Our Connectivity 3.0 software enables Industry 4.0 integration with existing control systems.
What measurement speeds do your systems support?
Our systems achieve measurement rates in the multiple kHz range, supporting production line speeds up to 500 meters per minute. This high-speed capability ensures real-time quality control without slowing production, enabling immediate feedback and closed-loop process adjustments.
